UNEB Bridged Curriculum 2024/2025

The education ministry has revealed that the abridged curriculum will be considered by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) for the 2024 national exams.

According to the ministry, the abridged curriculum will be used to set the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE), and the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) exams.

The abridged curriculum is a condensed version of the standard curriculums of the respective levels focusing on critical topics and learning outcomes.

The development was confirmed by Ketty Lamaro, the ministry’s permanent secretary Tuesday (February 15) in Kampala.

According to Lamaro, the ministry has already handed over the abridged curriculum to the national assessment body.

“We appeal to schools to implement the abridged curriculum as it is. The abridged curriculum was developed by reorganizing the scope and sequence of the content in the standard curriculum so that learners can cover more content in a relatively short span, without compromising quality,” she said.

She noted that there will be no new reading materials to be distributed under the abridged curriculum and that schools should use existing material to teach, but be guided by the abridged curriculum.

According to the ministry, the abridged curriculum is intended to enable the learners to cope with learning and progress to the next level.

The permanent secretary made the remarks Tuesday while addressing journalists on the implementation of the abridged curriculum for primary and secondary levels of education.

This was at the Uganda Media Center in Kampala.

Dr Grace Baguma, the Director National Curriculum Development Center (NCDC), said the abridged curriculum is aimed at recovering lost time and enabling all learners to be brought on board as schools reopen.

Will UNEB grading change?

Although the abridged curriculum will be used for UNEB assessment, the Board said the grading system will not change.

Mike Masikye Nangosya, the Director of Examinations at UNEB explained that a standard examination will be set within the abridged curriculum.

“Subsequently, we will have a standard grading system. We will not change the grading system this year,” he said.

He explained that UNEB subject specialists are already comparing what had been set and the content under the abridged curriculum.

“We already have question banks and the items are ready. What we are doing is that, we are analyzing the content in the abridged curriculum and what had been set,” he said.

Adding that,” If we find that the set papers have items that were removed under the abridged curriculum, we will make adjustments.”

UNEB Calendar

According to UNEB, examination activities will start this month with the registration of candidates.

UNEB warns schools from exorbitant charges, saying the registration fees have not been increased.

Daniel Odongo, UNEB’s executive director noted that candidates will pay sh34,000 for PLE, sh164,000 for UCE and sh186,000 for UACE and that normal registration will be concluded on May 31, 2024.

According to the UNEB calendar, late registration will be conducted for a month between June 1 to 30, 2024.

However, late registration will attract a surcharge of 100% for PLE candidates, 50% for both UCE and UACE.

Between July and September, schools will be required to display the names of registered candidates in the open within schools.

The UCE examination will start on October 14 to November 18, 2024. For PLE candidates, the exercise will start on November 7 to 9, 2024.

Whereas for UACE candidates, the process will start on November 18 to December 9, 2024.
