Mother Kevin Kearney, a Catholic missionary of The Little Sisters of St. Francis is also acknowledged for launching medical services at St. Francis Hospital Nsambya in 1903 and establishing a nursing training school (St. Francis Hospital Nsambya Training School) in 1921.
The evolution of the nursing profession in Uganda commenced with the training of dressers and midwives by these missionaries, initially conducted in “Luganda,” a local language of central Uganda. Subsequently, other religious missionaries joined the effort, including Catholic Sisters and White Fathers. Hospitals, initially humble structures such as mud huts and open-air consultation spaces, evolved into modern facilities, and midwifery training and maternity services expanded to other regions.
