Kayiwa International University Graduation Date
The fate of those who graduated from Namirembe-based Kayiwa International University on June 10, 2024, hangs in balance after the National Council for Higher Education (NHCE) said the institution’s license to operate had been withdrawn.
Kayiwa University is operated by Prof Simeone Kayiwa who is the lead pastor at Namirembe Christian Fellowship church in Kampala.
The University offers theological studies and other disciplines at various levels which include Certificates, Diplomas and Degrees.
Among those who graduated on Friday was controversial Pastor Aloysius Bugingo of House of Prayer Ministries.
NHCE said the documents that had been issued to graduates were illegal and could not be in the employment sector.
Cyrus Sebugenyi, an official from NHCE said the institution was given a letter of accreditation in 2015.
“When we granted them the licence, they promised to adhere to all the set standards but they failed, prompting us as a regulatory body to withdraw their license in 2019,” Sebugenyi said.
He noted that before closure they held a series of meetings aimed at streamlining the operations of the University but they failed to reach a consensus.
Sebugenyi said that in 2019, NCHE decided to carry out another inspection but the University failed to meet the minimum requirements to operate and this prompted the withdrawal of its license in 2019 and also closed it.
NHCE says the University did not among others have relevant teaching staff and materials and that they also didn’t have the necessary infrastructure and had failed to pay taxes.
Sam Waigolo, the NCHE Public Relations Officer on Friday told the New Vision that the University continued fraudulently teaching and admitting students.
“We learnt about the graduation two days ago but unfortunately Thursday was a public holiday but when we raided them, the deputy Resident City Commissioner Rubaga Division, Anderson Burora stopped us from stopping the graduation ceremony,” Waigolo said.
Burora on Friday said he had stopped NHCE and urged them to follow the law.
Waigolo said they would drag the institution to court.
On Friday Pastor Kayiwa told the New Vision that the decision by NHCE was illegal because his University had been accredited by the US and also had a charter.
